Other activities in and around Todgha Gorges

Todgha Gorge is perfectly situated for enjoying the beautiful mountain and desert scenery. From your base at A Secret Garden, you may want to spend a day exploring the mountains on nomad paths, or take a trip to see the Erg Chebbi sand dunes, a couple of hours away. Let us help you avoid the tourist traps -- we can organise your adventure and even accompany you, too.

1 Night Bivouac in Erg Chebbi

The Erg Chebbi sand dunes are often high on the list of "must see" places in Morocco. Unfortunately, that means most visitors' experiences in the dunes will look exactly the same: sleeping in a crowded camp on the edge of the dunes and waking up early to ride a dromedary to the nearest large dune to watch the sun peak over the sand. Generally the morning "sunrise" is not the peaceful setting pictured in advertising brochures: you'll be sharing the experience with hundreds of other tourists and the morning air will be loud with their voices. For lots of people, the experience is adequate.

But if you want to have a different kind of experience, this trip is for you.

Our Itinerary:

We'll start out from Todgha Gorge in the morning to travel to our starting place on the edge of the dunes. The drive takes about 3 hours. On the way we can stop to visit the souk in Errachidia, famous for its dates.

Once we arrive at Erg Chebbi, we'll meet our guide and our team of dromedaries before setting off across the dunes. It will take approximately 4 hours to traverse the dunes, which you can do either on foot or riding the dromedary. As we leave the edge of the dunes behind, the crowds will thin out and soon we'll have the entire sea of sand to ourselves. You'll hear nothing but the soft swish of sand beneath the dromedary's padded feet.

Our destination is a nomad camp on the far side of the dunes, on the edge of the black desert which stretches to the Algerian border. Here we'll eat a simple nomad meal and sleep in solitude beneath the vast and plentiful stars. In the morning, we'll wake up early to watch the real sunrise (the sun rising into the night)--a spectacular experience possible no where else on earth.

After breakfast, we'll traverse back across the dunes (by foot or riding the dromedary) before starting the drive back to Todgha Gorge.

What makes this trip unique:

  • Not offered by any other tour company
  • Private group
  • Traversing the entire Erg Chebbi dunes
  • Sleeping on the edge of the black desert, in complete silence and solitude
  • Watching the true sunrise -- something you'll likely never see again!

Hiking in Todgha Gorge

Hiking around Todgha Gorge and into the high plateau is a wonderful way to experience the area. Strolling through the centre of the gorge as most visitors do is impressive, but it's not enough to get a sense of your surroundings. It's once you leave the main road and ascend up into the mountains on nomad trails that you'll  see what this place is really about.

Let us accompany you on a half- or full-day hiking adventure. We'll select a route given your preferences for duration, difficulty, and vistas. We'll meander through the lush river gardens to see local men and women working in the fields. Or we'll climb high into the mountains to catch a glimpse of nomadic life, passing shepherds tending their goat herds high on the cliffs. Along the way, we'll share with you information about the area and the people who call it home.
